Summary
Introduction by Richard Evans (Principal of Emc.Arts) with an overview of the discussions by six Working Groups of experts in various areas, with six Case Studies, and a goal to develop policies, approaches, and procedures that would guide a range of identified options for future dance documentation, preservation, and access. The afternoon session has three lectures; Dr. Gary Marchionini (Open Video Project at UNC Chapel Hill) talks about his work in moving image searchability and the technologies that are being developed to enable users of large digital archives to more quickly and easily scan and find images; Mia Garlick (Legal Counsel of Creative Commons) describes the online organization's groundbreaking copyright licensing system for digital works, which allows artists safety and flexibility in protecting and making their creative work available for public viewing, sharing, and collaboration ; and Dr. David Forsyth (Computer Science Professor at UC Berkeley) spoke about recent research in content-based image retrieval, a field which potentially could provide a major advance from text-based search engines with regard to moving images, especially dance. The activities conclude with feedback from one of the three smaller groups of assembled participants (including many staff members from the Library for the Performing Arts) introducing themselves and sharing their thoughts on this conference, what has been talked about, and what has been left out so far. Conclusion in the South Court Auditorium summarizing the three plan feedback sessions along with comments from participants.
