- Summary
- Streaming file 1, Cassette 1 Side A: Following a brief program introduction in German, David Tudor performs his piece "Dialects" (1:25); Tudor is then interviewed (in German, but provides answers to the queries in English, as will be the case with interviewees throughout the material unless otherwise noted), regarding his collaboration with John Cage, as well as his (Tudor's) composing and performance process. (17:44) The focus then turns to composer Michael Pugliese, beginning with the premiere performance of the work Five Stone Wind, created in collaboration with Cage and Tudor. (24:35) Pugliese then discusses his work with Cage, and the side/file ends abruptly following this segment. (38:33)
- Streaming File 2, Cassette 1 Side B: The file/cassette side begins with a recording of David Tudor's, Takehisa Kosugi's and Michael Pugliese's composition, Live In Japan. Following the recording, Kosugi is interviewed regarding the interaction between musicians and dancers during a Merce Cunningham Dance Company performance, his role as music director and composer within the MCDC, and the many roles he must take on while creating compositions. (15:18) A live performance of the Kosugi piece Non Titled immediately follows. (22:49) At its conclusion, the program shifts to discuss a number of composers whose work has been influenced by Cunningham, Cage and others in Cunningham's artistic orbit. Composer Thomas Seelig discusses his piece Programm No. 4, with the piece played both under and following the interview. (This section of the material is entirely in German.) The next segment spotlights Thomas Zunk, who performs his piece Eine Kleine Live Performance and discusses his bow gamelan, a string-water-and nail instrument which he handcrafted specifically for the work. (37:17) The file/cassette ends in the middle of this section.
- Streaming File 3, Cassette 2 Side A: The Zunk interview continues, with the composer explaining what it is about his work that connects him to a panel on music and Merce Cunningham. Following the end of this section, a recording of the Mark Lingck piece Bach Essays is played (3:52), followed by an interview with Lingck. (This segment is entirely in German.) (10:30) This is followed by a recording of the Christian Venghaus/Niko Tenten composition Pausen Knuller. (12:33) Composer Ricardo Mandolini is then interviewed via telephone, (This section is entirely in German.) followed by a recording of his piece Circulos Fosforecentes en Fondo Negro. (15:00) This closes out the material on this file/cassette side. There is no material on Side B of the original second cassette tape.
- Streaming File 4, Cassette 3 Side A: A live performance by composer Sven Åke Johannson of his piece Telephone Book and an interview with Johannson (entirely in German) begin the content of this file/cassette side. This is followed by a telephone interview with composer Robin Minard (also conducted entirely in German) and a recorded performance of his work Qu'il m'en souvienne. (10:15) The next segment features the premiere performance of Hans Peter Kuhn's Rauschen, a soundscape/spoken word piece. (22:15) This concludes the material in this file/on the cassette side.
- Streaming File 5, Cassette 3 Side B: The file/cassette side begins with a performance of composer Mayako Kubo's Rope Dance. This is immediately followed by an extremely brief interview with Kubo conducted entirely in German. The final event in the workshop program is a live Event with music composed instantaneously by David Tudor, Michael Pugliese and Takehisa Kosugi. This concludes the material in the file/on the cassette side.
