- Summary
- Fox first discusses his and The Residents initial exposure to John Cages compositions, as well as The Residents incorporation of elements of Cage pieces into their works. Fox then speaks about the genesis of The Residents and the collectives artistic philosophy (3:20). Following this, he discusses their then gestating work, which eventually became The Residents Part 3: Ships A Goin Down, and muses on the possibility of a collaboration with Cage as part of the series (5:20). This is followed by a consideration of the role of rhythm, time, linearity and American musical history in The Residents output (11:20). This grows into a consideration of the groups use of technology in terms of musical instruments and other creative materials. (20:00). This is followed by a question about the members musical training and background (21:33). Recurrent themes and motifs in The Residents work are then discussed (22:11). The evolution of the collectives attitude toward and relation with the conventional music industry , method of album production and ethos of public performance is then explored (24:50). This becomes a discussion of critical response to the groups current appearances in Cube-E, a show riffing on Elvis Presley and rock music (30:30). The Residents response to then current music and musical performers, particularly Michael Jackson, is next discussed (33:15). Following this, Fox sums up John Cages influence on music. (37:05) Fox and interviewer Elliot Caplan discuss the role of integrity in sustaining careers in the arts (38:52). The two men then consider the impact of the dance portion in Cube-E (44:40).
