Summary
The parties most responsible for the disappearance of 43 student teachers in Ayotzinapa, maintains José Reveles, are the last three presidents of the Republic [of Mexico]. They should have conducted a firm and authoritative anti-drug policy, yet they knuckled under and blindly served the appetite of the United States, the country with the most addicts in the world. Since Vicente Fox's time in office, the government abandoned the aerial fumigation of fields of cannabis and opium poppies. Today the military combats these planting by hand, but cannot keep pace with their explosive growth. Thus, thanks to the erratic "War on Drugs", Mexico became the world's second largest producer of heroin, second only to Afghanistan and overtaking Colombia and the so-called "Asiatic triangle." Lawless areas like Guerrero are a paradise for these illegal crops, with the trade oiled by federal, state, and municipal corruption. Into this hell stumbled the student teachers...and no one wanted to see it. "Blame Heroin."
