- John Benton, then an undergraduate at Haverford College (Haverford, Pa.), would become a renowned medievalist.
- Reply to Benton’s letter of March 7, which accompanied an essay on Eliot. Eliot points out that Benton has attributed to him a conscious design for matters which were not deliberate. He also denies the validity of Benton’s comparison of the trimmers of Dante’s Inferno (Part 3, lines 22-69) whom Dante describes as lifeless, spiritless, mindless, to the chorus in Eliot’s verse drama Murder in the Cathedral.
