- Since its purchase in 1604 by Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset, the house at Knole, Kent, has been inhabited by thirteen generations of the Sackvilles.
- Vita Sackville-West wrote Knole and the Sackvilles (1923) about the house’s history. Her intimate friend Virginia Woolf drew on the house’s history for her novel Orlando (1928).
