Summary
In de Nederlandse negentiende eeuw zijn prachtige winterlandschappen geschilderd. Bijna alle belangrijke kunstenaars hebben zich er mee beziggehouden. Deze fascinerende 'winterschilders' zijn echter nooit als groep onderwerp van een publicatie geweest. En dat terwijl ze hoge ogen gooien bij het publiek, zowel toen als nu. Wintertaferelen waren zo populair dat kunstenaars zich erin specialiseerden, zoals Schelfhout, Spohler en Leickert. Maar bijna alle schilders waagden zich er wel aan. Denk aan Springer, Koekkoek, Apol, Mauve, Tholen en Mankes. De publicatie heeft een sociaal-historische component, waarbij ingegaan wordt op het plezier maar ook op de misère die de vaak strenge winters met zich meebrachten. Daarnaast is er een uitgebreid kunsthistorisch hoofdstuk waarin de mooiste Nederlandse winterlandschappen in hun context besproken worden. Romantiek, Haagse School, impressionisme en en het begin van de abstracte kunst komen allemaal langs, diepgevroren dan wel sneeuwbepoederd.
