- Summary
- Depictions of the everyday activities of an extended African American family living in Mobile and Shady Grove, Alabama in 1956 during Jim Crow segregation, taken by Parks on assignment for a Life magazine photo essay entitled "The Restraints: Open and Hidden," that was published in September 1956.
- Included are a portrait of the family elders, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Thornton, in their living room surrounded by family pictures; views of women and young children outside segregated businesses; a mother pouring a glass of water from an outdoor fauset; children at play; a group of children excluded from a Whites-only park; individuals using a segregated drinking fountain; young people socializing in front of a country store; adults socializing; the interior of a one-room schoolhouse; and a commercial billboard that is specifically directed to Blacks. Of note are views of poor housing and living conditions, and various forms of segregation signage in public spaces.

- Gordon Parks, 1912-2006, was an African American photographer, filmmaker, writer and composer who was a staff photographer for Life magazine from 1948-1972, and a freelancer for Vogue and Glamour magazines (late 1940s); a documentary photographer for the Farm Security Administration/Office of War Information (1942-1944) and the Standard Oil Photography Project (late 1940s); director of the films "The Learning Tree" (1969) and "Shaft" (1971); and author of the semi-autobiographical novel "The Learning Tree" (1963), books of poetry, and manuals on photography and filmmaking.
