Summary

The painterly universe of Jagoda Bednarsky (b. Złotoryja, Poland, 1988; lives and works in Frankfurt am Main) revolves around questions of layering and planes of localization: What is in the picture? What is behind it? What is in front of it? Technical reproductions of graphic art or photographs from magazines, photo books, and the Internet serve as the thematic and formal basis for the artist's creative process. By collaging and overpainting found and invented imagery, she creates seemingly haphazard and mystical syntheses of ambivalent realities. Additional techniques of visual generation Bednarsky employs include mirroring, serial iteration, doubling, crossing out, and web-like interconnection; as we seek to grasp the nexus of information and knowledge implicit in them, we are spellbound by the enigmatic aura they exude. Jagoda Bednarsky's first monograph includes numerous illustrations as well as a text by Eric-John Russell, a lyrical essay by Jenny Kalliokulju, and discussions of the artist's work by the art historians Meike Behm and Elke Gruhn.
