Summary
The Louis Sharp Photograph Collection depicts the professional acquaintances and activities of singer and actor Louis Sharp from the 1920s through the 1940s. Sharp's personal life is not depicted. The collection consists of studio portraits, probably used for publicity purposes, of Sharp's friends and colleagues that include Pearl Bailey, Billy Butler, Ruby Hill, Theo D. Ricardo, and Marguerite Avery; group portraits showing Sharp with Canada Lee, with acquaintances on a airplane boarding ramp, and with the cast of the play "Green Pastures" in a train station; and theatrical publicty photographs from the 1946 production of "St. Louis Woman," and the 1938 WPA production of "Haiti." There are no individual portraits of Sharp.

  • Born in 1901, Louis Sharp was an African-American tenor and actor. A graduate of the University of Kansas, he moved to California before settling in Harlem, New York City in the 1930s. Sharp performed in many concerts, recitals and theater productions including the Federal Theatre Project and Broadway. He died in 1976.

Born in 1901, Louis Sharp was an African-American tenor and actor. A graduate of the University of Kansas, he moved to California before settling in Harlem, New York City in the 1930s. Sharp performed in many concerts, recitals and theater productions including the Federal Theatre Project and Broadway. He died in 1976.
