- Summary
- Charles Pierce (1926-1999) was a drag performer and actor. He began performing as a female impressionist in theaters and night clubs in the 1950s, and retired his act in 1990. His letters to Richard Barsam, a film scholar, date from 1988 to 1999 (bulk 1995-1999) and contain reminiscences about his career, including performing at the Gilded Cage in San Francisco in the 1960s and the Village Gate in New York from 1974 to 1975; observations about contemporary and past plays and films; his thoughts on other drag performers and the history of drag performance; and anecdotes about friends such as Bea Arthur, Joan Edgar, Bill Erwin, and Alice Ghostley. Pierce's letters often incorporate photographs, fliers, and clippings (both photocopied and original). The collection also contains copies of some of Barsam's outgoing letters and a program for Pierce's memorial service.
