- "In 1693 the King of Spain instructed his governor in Florida to grant freedom to all Africans arriving in Florida. His edict can be seen as a symbol of the fact that thousands of Africans lived free in Florida for many generations. This project follows Florida's chapters of black freedom and it catalogs the US campaign to end it."
- "'The King's Edict' project, including this informational booklet was made possible with a major grant from the Florida Humanities Council. The project sponsor was Troy Community Academy with the partnership of the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Dept. and the Historical Museum of Southern Florida ... The tour guides for the project are Troy Community Academy students ... project coordinator was William Keddell ..."--Page 1.
- "The Seminoles coalesced from both Native Americans and formerly enslaved Africans who migrated to Florida in the Spanish era. The Native Seminoles are derived from independent Lower Creek Indians, Miccosukee, Yammassee, Red Sticks and other Indian groups. The African Seminoles, for the most part, were escapees from enslavement in the English Colony of Carolina."--Page 4.
