- Note
- Programs (1837 - 1937) for Hamlet by William Shakespeare, primarily in England and the United States. Over one hundred playbills and programs documenting performances by a range of actors from the mid-19th to the early 20th Century including E. L. Davenport, Henry Irving, Herbert Beerbohm Tree, and Johnston Forbes-Robertson. Also included are performances by Tommaso Salvini in an Italian translation that is uncredited but probably by Giulio Carcano (N.Y.); Sarah Bernhardt in the French translation by Eugène Morand and Marcel Schwob (London); H.N. Sarmatow and L.M. Dalmatowa in an uncredited Russian translation at the Terrace Garden Theatre (N.Y.), and the Moscow Art Theatre in the Russian translation by A. Kroneberg (Moscow).
- The Irish novelist Bram Stoker is credited as the manager of the Royal Lyceum Theatre for Henry Irving's performances there.
- Item 10, included here by error, is a mock playbill related to Charles Coghlan's The Royal Box, a comedy about James Clarence, a flamboyant actor based on Edmund Kean who gives a benefit performance for Mr. "Tight-Wire" Widgetts which includes a scene from Hamlet. Walker Whiteside, who starred in this play, is represented in this volume with programs from his actual performances of Hamlet.
- Bound with Item 11, a program for an unspecified performance by Lawrence Barrett with George Morton as Laertes, is a handwritten postcard from Mr. Morton to the drama critic of the New York Clipper, Ernest C. Whitton, attempting to date and place the production.
- A number of items in this volume belong to the Stead Collection.
