- Summary
- Karel Appel was one of the most important Dutch painters in the second half of the 20th century. Born 1921 in Amsterdam, he later went to Paris where he was one of the founders of the CoBrA movement (alongside Asger Jorn and Karl Otto Götz) and developed novel forms of expressions as an alternative to the academic ideas of art. Inspired by the style of art informel and influenced by elements of folk art, Karel Appel's paintings were showcased several times at the Biennale in Venice and São Paulo as well as at Documenta in Kassel, Germany.0To mark the tenth anniversary of his death, the Emil Schumacher Museum together with the Karel Appel Foundation, Amsterdam, and the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague, offer a new perspective on the internationally renowned oeuvre of the Dutchman.
