Fred Danieli speaks with Peter Conway about his time at Ballet Theatre (now American Ballet Theatre) including his impressions of Mikhail Fokine and Agnes de Mille; the relative conservatism of the choreographers at American Ballet Theatre compared with the progressive approach of Balanchine; the ballet Goyescas; dancing in opera-ballets; very briefly, Nina Stroganova; Ballet Caravan's South American tour, in 1941, including the repertoire; Todd Bolender and others in [Eugene Loring's] Billy the Kid; Lew Christensen and José Fernández's ballet Pastorele; the social aspects of the South American tour; dancing with El Ballet de las Américas upon his return to the United States; the inhospitable conditions for ballet at that time.
