• Eighty programs and playbills (1875 - 1941) for Hamlet by William Shakespeare documenting performances by a range of actors from the late 19th to the early 20th century, primarily in England and the United States, including Edwin Adams, Barry Sullivan, Edwin Booth, and the Italian actor Ernesto Rossi who appeared in his own adaptation of the play. Of note are three performances by women in the lead role: the orator, abolitionist, and feminist Anna Elizabeth Dickinson (Rochester, N.Y.), Mrs. Bandmann-Palmer (London), and Sarah Bernhardt, with Constant Coquelin as the First Gravedigger (N.Y.). Includes the "first joint appearance in New York" by Edwin Booth and Helena Modjeska; a performance by Hermann Vezin (London); two productions in German; Nikolai Akimov's 1932 production with music by Dmitri Shostakovich at the Vakhtangov Theatre (Moscow).
• Item 65 and 66 contain political advertisements for the 1900 presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan and Adlai E. Stevenson.
• Item 73 is an illustrated souvenir program for Johnston Forbes-Robertson's final performance at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, June 6th, 1913, with a cover photograph of Emil Fuchs's marble bust of the actor.
• A number of items in this volume belong to the Stead and Townsend Walsh Collections. Some contain marginalia by theatre-goers.
