- Note
- Middle English translation of a Latin version of the work by St. Catherine known as Libro della divina dottrina, Tratto della divina provvidenza, or simply Dialogo. The Dialago was translated into Latin by Cristofero Guidini and Stefano Maconi and in part by Raymund of Capua; Guidini's version, which is close to the Italian, is largely followed here. See: Mary Denise, Sister. "The Orchard of Syon, an introduction," in Traditio, 1958, pages 269-293; Catherine, of Siena. The orcherd of Syon / edited from the early manuscripts by Phyllis Hodgson and Gabriel M. Liegey, 1966, v. 1, pages v-viii.
- Pollard, Short-title catalogue (cited below) wrongly suggests this is a translation of Raymond of Capua's Legenda maior.
- Printed at the expense of Richard Sutton, steward of the monastery of Sion. See page [348].
- "Lenuoye of Dane James the translater": pages [347]-[348]. "A reading of the text fails to bear out the assertion that 'Dane James' was the translator, or at least, the chief translator of the work"; someone by this name may have assisted the anonymous translator. See article by Sister Mary Denise, pages 291-293.
- Imprint from colophon.
- Signatures: pi¹⁰(-pi7) a-z⁶ &⁶ [rum]⁶ [us]⁶ A⁶ B⁴. Leaf pi7, presumably blank (text is continuous from pi6v to pi8r), is not present in copies examined; not counted in collation, above.
- Spencer Coll. copy: Leaf pi7, presumably blank, excised, leaving a stub.
- Printed in 2 columns. Gothic type; 41 lines.
- Illustrations: 11 woodcuts (Hodnett 862-869), comprising a full-page cut within historiated border on verso of title page, repeated on page [349], and 9 smaller cuts within double-line borders, including cut on title page and two repeats. Four historiated border pieces flanking the cuts on title page and page [19], and two type ornament rules on title page. Scroll above cut on title page, with printed legend: Ecce ancilla Domini. Title page and first page of each of the seven parts printed in red and black. Historiated and ornamental initials in several sizes.
