- Summary
- Soprano Caterina Jarboro gives a vivid overview of her life and career in opera and the musical stage to the Black Drama class of Jim Hatch at the City College of New York. Jarboro studied in North Carolina and then in New York. She sang in the theater musical Shuffle Along and in James P. Johnson's Running Wild. She studied in Paris and, for three seasons prior to her American debut, sang in France and Italy. In 1930 she debuted in opera with Verdi's Aida at the Puccini Theatre in Milan, Italy. In 1933, impresario Alfredo Salmaggi hired her to sing with his opera company at the New York Hippodrome. After her debut at the New York Hippodrome was the first of a series of appearances in summer opera. After her final engagement there in 1935, she sang for four seasons in Brussels and other European cities, where she met many other artists. She returned to the United States in 1941. Among her performances was a recital at Town Hall in 1942 and another in 1944 at Carnegie Hall. She retired in 1955.
