  • "From a very early time the superior skill of foreign printers had procured them many commissions to print service-books for the English market, alike on account of their greater accuracy, their experience in printing in red and black, and the more attractive illustrations which they had at their disposal. Not long after 1470 a Sarum Breviary was printed abroad, possibly at Cologne ... When the Paris printers and publishers had won the admiration of all Europe by their pretty editions of the Hours of the Blessed Virgin, they competed with each other for the English market"--Fine books, by Alfred W. Pollard. 1912, pages 228-229.

Fairfax Murray, page 1077. The present work includes 6 cuts reproduced in Fairfax Murray from other editions: Tiburtine sibyl and Augustus, Nativity, David and Uriah, from set 3; Job and Martyrdom of St. John, from set 4a; Adoration of the Magi, from Set 5. -- 10 small cuts in the text (Evangelists, scenes from the Passion, the Sacred Heart), on leaves b8v, c1r, c2r, e5v, f1v, f3v, f5v, q2r, q4r, q6r; some also used in the borders.

  • Historiated and decorative metal cut and woodcut borders throughout, some criblé, many accompanied by captions in Latin or French, from various series originally employed in Books of hours printed by Philippe Pigouchet or by him for Vostre. Some are ascribed to the Master of the Apocalypse Rose of Sainte Chapelle (also known as the Master of the Unicorn Hunt) or to the workshop of Jean Pichore by Tenschert and Nettekoven. See Horae B.M.V., cited above, pages 126-128, 343-344. For a table of the Pigouchet/Vostre border series, see Catalogue of a collection of early French books in the library of C. Fairfax Murray, page 1078; for reproductions of some of those employed here, including the calendar series, the prodigal son, the Sacraments, the signs of the Last Judgement and the Dance of Death, see Claudin, A.
