Summary
  • Depictions of participants and activities related to the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom (1963) and the Poor People's Campaign (1968), both held in Washington, D.C., that were photographed for two sociological studies conducted by sociologist Albert E. Gollins for the Bureau of Social Science Research.
  • The March on Washington series consists of aerial views of the crowd gathered around the National Mall between the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial; views of parked buses and traffic conditions near the Mall; and a view of the capital from across the Potomac River. The Poor People's Campaign series consists of views of the African American residents and the plywood and plastic-sheeting huts of "Resurrection City" built on the Mall; views of demonstrators gathered around the Mall's Reflecting Pool; and candid shots of Black and White demonstrators. Well-known civil rights activists and other public figures are not depicted.

  • The Bureau of Social Science Research, 1950-1986, was a non-profit research organization that developed social theories and research methods which were applied to contemporary social problems. Albert E. Gollin, 1930-1999, was a media sociologist and research associate of the bureau who conducted sociological studies of the 1963 March on Washington and the 1968 Poor People's Campaign to study the role of the media as it covered and influenced these events.
