Summary
Collection consists of photographic reproductions of the photographic panels used in the 1969 "Harlem On My Mind" exhibition held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, in New York City. The images trace the history of persons of African descent in New York City from the colonial 17th century to the mid-1960s, and focus primarily on the growth and development of Harlem as the center of Black culture in the United States during the 20th century. Images depict both prominent and lesser-known individuals; views of residences and businesses; street life; social life; religious gatherings; living conditions; political, social and cultural events; athletics; and artistic, literary and entertainment achievements. Of note, many of the images used for the exhibition were by Harlem photographer James VanDerZee, which would introduce his work to the general public.

Biography (note)
  • "Harlem on My Mind: Cultural Capital of Black America 1900-1968" was a photographic and multi-media exhibition, organized by author/historian Allon Schoener, that was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, in 1969. Intended as a demonstration of how the African American community in Harlem made major contributions to mainstream American culture, it instead provoked major criticism from different quarters. Criticism included the cultural elite's objection to the use of multi-media technology and the display of African American culture at the Met; the objection by African American painters and sculptors to the exclusion of their work from the exhibition; and the charges of anti-Semitism leveled at an essay written for the exhibition's catalogue, which later resulted in the catalogue being withdrawn. Despite the controversy, the exhibition was well attended during its three month run.
