Judy Kinberg speaks with Elizabeth Kendall about the preservation of the recordings of the television series Dance in America; making Steamheat [Great Performances: Dance in America: Bob Fosse: Steamheat; 1990], the documentary about Bob Fosse including how she found the writer for the program, William Henry III [William A. Henry III]; producing a film (1992) of Mark Morris's The hard nut; an anecdote about Jerome Robbins regarding the filming of his ballet Opus 19; more on The hard nut; the Balanchine celebration program (A Gala Balanchine Celebration; 1993), including the challenges of filming it; working with Matthew Diamond; the program on Paul Taylor entitled The Wreckers Ball (1989) including the unconventional set and working with Taylor; the 2002 film From Broadway: Fosse; her work with American Ballet Theatre beginning with the 1998 program Variety and Virtuosity: American Ballet Theatre Now; the 2004 program The dream, with American Ballet Theatre including her personal connection to the ballet The dream, by Frederick Ashton; the 1999 film of Le corsaire including why she had the dancers narrate the story; learning the Danish language; the 2005 program on Swan lake with Gillian Murphy as Odette/Odile; working with Kevin McKenzie; the editing process including the importance of sensitivity to the music; the program Born to be Wild, featuring Ethan Stiefel, Vladimir Malakhov, Angel Corella, and Jose Carreño; making the 2009 film, Something to dance about, a biography of Jerome Robbins including her determination that the portrayal of Robbins be open and even-handed; the role of intuition in her creative process; the three projects on which she worked with Robbins; the critical and popular success of the film; the short film celebrating the 50th anniversary of Alvin Ailey's work Revelations; her regret that the late Merrill Brockway and late Emile Ardolino are not present at this interview.
