- In the field of Colombian geography very few investigative works have been written focused on the role of colonialism, both external and internal, in the process of creating the national territory. The study carried out by the geographer Carla Gómez Creutzberg on the explorations and works of the English naturalist Frederick Simons, on La Guajira, the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and the Sinú, at the end of the 19th century, is an invaluable advance in this regard. The author, without detracting from the numerous factual contributions left by Simons as a result of his explorations, also analyzes the colonialist character of his works. If we consult Mary Luise Pratt (Imperial eyes: travel literature and transculturation), she shows the colonial background that is concealed behind the apparent neutrality of the traveler, or the use that is given to his work in the metropolis. The text of Carla Gómez is enriched by the meticulous compilation, both in Colombia and in England, of studies and maps published by Simons as a result of its geographical works in La Guajira, Sierra Nevada and Sinú. Much of this material, which corresponds to the nineteenth century, is very difficult to achieve and is very useful for future research on these regions. The present book marks a way to follow for the analysis of the colonial travelers of all the centuries by Colombia.
