Summary
An undated, unbound 19th century scrapbook of unknown origin containing halftone reproductions of caricatures, drawings, photographs, and portraits of 18th and 19th century theatrical, literary, and musical figures primarily from Austria and Germany but also from England, France, and the United States. Figures from Austria and Germany include Ludwig Devrient with E.T.A. Hoffmann, Alexander Girardi, Carl Theophilus Doebbelin, Eduard von Bauernfeld, Adolph Böttger, Friedrich von Bodenstedt, Albert Bürklin, Ida Boy-Ed, scenes from the Oberammergau Passion Play, and artists affiliated with the Hofburgtheater (Vienna), the Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtisches Theater (Berlin), and the Königliche Schauspielhaus (Berlin), among others. Of note are full page reproductions of R. Staudenbaur's wood engravings of John Singer Sargent's portrait of Lawrence Barrett and a portrait of Edwin Booth [artist unknown]. There are no original artworks.
