- Summary
- Essay highly critical of the government of Joaquín Balaguer, this essay is a response to Balaguer's memoir, Memorias de un Cortesano en la Era de Trujillo (1988). Joaquín Balaguer (1906-2002) served many years in the Trujillo administration in several capacities but always as a close confident. After Trujillo's assassination Balaguer served as President of the Dominican Republic for 12 years (1966-1978, 1986-1990, 1990-1994, y 1994-1996). While he was not considered a dictator his administration was authoritarian and often political opponents were jailed and killed, opposition newspapers were seized and other authoritarian methods were used to maintain his absolute power. Balaguer was highly educated and was also considered one of the most important Dominican intellectuals of the 20th century. The list of his fiction and non-fiction works is extensive.
