- Summary
- Collection depicts some of the educational activities and peer recognition of flight school instructor and pilot Ida Van Smith, from the mid-1970s to the early-1990s. Depictions of her personal life are very limited. The collection consists of studio portraits and candid shots of Smith; group portraits showing Smith with students, flight school employees, fellow aviators and celebrities; views of Smith participating in aviation gatherings, various events, classroom discussions and field trips, and hosting a local cable television program; and views of classes, workshops, award presentations, exhibits, career day events and airport visits.
- Also depicted are Smith's husband, Benjamin E. Dunn, and former students who pursued careers in aviation. Among those depicted with Smith are pioneering African American astronauts Charles F. Bolden, Jr., Frederick D. Gregory and Dr. Mae Jemison; and aviator Jeana Yeager.

- Ida Van Smith (1917-2003) was an African American aviator and teacher who, at age fifty, earned her pilot's license and opened the first of her Ida Van Smith Flight Clubs on Long Island, New York in 1967. Through her schools Smith introduced inner-city children and adults to careers in aviation utilizing lectures, demonstrations, airport tours, and flying lessons. Smith retired from teaching in 1977, but continued to promote her over 20 flight clubs. Smith was published and featured in aviation and education journals, and honored by various aviation and educational organizations.
