Summary

Thirty eight programs (1892 - 1938) for Lady Windermere's fan by Oscar Wilde documenting the play's original productions, in London under the actor-manager George Alexander, with Winfred Emery as Lady Windermere and Marion Terry as Mrs. Erlynne, and in New York under Charles Frohman, with Julia Arthur in her stage debut as Lady Windermere and May Brookyn as Mrs Erlynne. Subsequent revivals in England and the United States are also documented.

Note

Item 6, a program for a pre-Broadway engagement in 1893 at the Columbia Theatre (Boston, Mass.) under A.M. Palmer includes an advertisement for Edward E. Rice's burlesque extravaganza 1492 up to date, with music by Carl Pflueger and libretto by R.A. Barnet, a comic observance of the quadricentennial anniversary of Christopher Columbus's expedition to the New World.
Item 8, a program for the original Broadway production at Palmer's Theatre, includes an unattributed excerpt reprinted from the New York World newspaper, February 9, [1893], entitled Did Oscar design them?, with detailed descriptions of the gowns worn by Julia Arthur in her role as Lady Windermere.
Item 9, a program for the original Broadway production at Palmer's Theatre, contains half-tone photographs of the performers pasted to the program in scrapbook fashion, as well as an obituary tribute to the late May Brookyn who had recently committed suicide.
Item 22, a program for the 1914 revival at the Hudson Theatre (N.Y.) starring Margaret Anglin, with Sydney Greenstreet in a role, includes a notice to theatre goers from the producers Klaw and Erlanger warning against illegal ticket selling and ticket speculation.
Item 27, a fragment identified by library staff as a page from the [1911?] American Play Company catalog, provides the credits for an undated revival, starring Julia Arthur and featuring Maurice Barrymore and Agnes Booth, and is part of the Robinson Locke collection.
Item 37, a program for Lord Longford's 1938 production at the Dublin (Ireland) Gate Theatre, with Vivien Dillon and Jean Anderson, is the gift of the theatre.
A number of the programs belong to the Stead or Players Club collections.
