Summary
  • Collection depicts aspects of the personal life of dentist and civil rights activist Errold D. Collymore from the 1940s to the early 1990s, consisting of individual and group portraits, candid shots, and theater scenes. Collymore's career as a dentist, and his civil rights and civic activities, are not depicted.
  • Collection consists of a studio portrait of Collymore; Collymore shown with a group of unidentified men wearing chef's hats and aprons; and in a candid shot with his daughter and grandson (1959). Also included are views of Collymore's wife, amateur actress Magdalene Lewis Collymore, featured in scenes from a theatrical production entitled "Back from the Wars" (ca. 1940s); snapshots of Collymore's grandchildren (1967) and two unidentified young girls (ca. 1940s); a candid shot of brother-in-law Robert Lee Johns (1992); and studio portraits of friends and acquaintances.

Biography (note)
  • Errold Collymore was born in Barbados in 1892, immigrated to the United States in 1912, and graduated from Howard University's dental school. Facing discrimination while trying to rent a dental office in White Plains, New York in 1926, he began a life-long pursuit of civil rights and became known locally as the "Fighting Dentist." Collymore co-founded the Urban League of Westchester and organized the White Plains/Greenburgh branch of the NAACP, serving as its president for many years. He died in 1972.

Errold Collymore was born in Barbados in 1892, immigrated to the United States in 1912, and graduated from Howard University's dental school. Facing discrimination while trying to rent a dental office in White Plains, New York in 1926, he began a life-long pursuit of civil rights and became known locally as the "Fighting Dentist." Collymore co-founded the Urban League of Westchester and organized the White Plains/Greenburgh branch of the NAACP, serving as its president for many years. He died in 1972.
