Description
1 box : 17 unnumbered leaves of photographs; .25 lf
Summary
Unbound portion of a 20th century photograph album (17 leaves in 17 folders) containing publicity stills of early film stars and publicity stills of officers of the United States Navy of the World War II era. The pages of the album have been roughly cut, presumably to excise them. As a result, handwritten annotations and captions accompanying the photographs have been mostly excised as well. Other military and war-themed events also receive some coverage.

  • Folder 2 contains two photographs of General John J. Pershing. The first photograph, a sheared fragment that may be an official military or news media image, shows Pershing's arrival at the U.S. Naval Station at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, February (?) 28, 1925. The second photograph, an undated candid snapshot, was likely taken in late 1918 during Pershing's command of the American Expeditionary Forces in the Meuse-Argonne offensive of World War I. Both photographs are captioned as inspections and show Pershing in uniform, reviewing troops at Guantánamo in the former and greeting officers on a road in Meuse in the latter.
  • Folder 7 contains a sheared fragment, with an accompanying caption, of Llewellyn Pierce Spalding's posed photograph of the 24th Aero Squadron at the Vavincourt Aerodome, France, November 12, 1918.
  • Folder 17 contains a fragment of the color poster for William DeMille's 1923 silent film, Grumpy.
