- Summary
- Ursula Paszehr conducted many years of field research in the village and Bedouin society of Jordan. She brought together extensive material on performance and on the oral verses of the mourning rites. The female death rite, niyaha, is an ancient ritual practice, based in the Middle East and the Mediterranean region. In Jordan, this ritual is increasingly forgotten. The question of the functions of the mourning ritual, both for the community and for the individual, is at the center of the work and is answered interdisciplinary, taking into account approaches of Arabic studies / Islamic studies, ethnology, musicology, and psychology. A special focus of the work is on the investigation of this rite as a form of expression of both ritualized and individual mourning.
