Summary
The manuscript scores that make up the Black line prints collection were created as part of the Work Projects Administration (WPA). Working under the aegis the Education Department of the Federal Music Program of the WPA, Carleton Sprague Smith, chief of the New York Public Library's Music Division, devised a number of projects including one devoted to copying music. The aim of this project was to make a large body of hitherto inaccessible music available for use. The name of the collection is based on the diazo method of reproducing music. Some of the scores were edited by Hans. T. David and Sydney Beck.
