Summary
  • Working out of Mumbai, Nai is one of the few contemporary artists in India to consistently work in an abstract style. As the son of a clothing textile merchant, he is inspired by the vivid colours and materiality of the fabrics. Cotton, jute, canvas, newspaper, and thread are scratched, folded, and pressed into geometrical shapes, designs, or panel pieces. Nai transforms the shabby, lived-in, and character-filled materials into neat constructions. There are twelve pieces on show at the exhibition, including an eye-catching and immense installation created from enormous balls of cotton.
  • De in Mumbai wonende Manish Nai (Gujarat, 1980) is een van de weinigen van zijn generatie in India die consequent de abstractie aanhoudt. De kunstenaar werkt uitsluitend met ongewone 'arme' materialen en natuurlijke kleuren. Jutte, karton, canvas, krantenpapier en draad bekrast, plooit, perst en draait hij tot geometrische vormen, tekeningen of werken op paneel.00Abstracte kunst wordt vaak geassocieerd met kilheid, industriële materialen en perfectie. Drie kenmerken die het werk van Nai niet bezitten. De armoedige, geleefde en karaktervolle materialen zitten gewrongen in hun strakke vorm. Opvallend de laatste jaren zijn ook Manish Nai's foto's van billboards van na de financiële crisis in 2008. Advertenties bleven uit en wat zichtbaar werd waren de lege vlakken en metalen structuren van deze billboards in Bombay.
