- Summary
- During the great Irish potato famine of the 1840s one million men, women and children died of starvation and disease. In the ten years after the famine began, over two million Irish emigrated. Skibbereen in West Cork was one of the worst affected areas in the country. From a population of 105,500 in the Skibbereen Union Area an estimated 28,000 people died between 1846-1849. Local historical sites and interviews are included as well as scenes from Skibbereen Famine Commemoration Week and the Canadian Famine Commemoration held at Grosse Ile Quarantine Station in Québec.
