Summary

São Paulo Museum of Modern Art celebrates its seventy years with an exhibition that highlights the institution's core values. From the outset, MAM sought to form a collection through prospective exhibits, develop a pedagogical practice, expand the field of photography as art, and anticipate the direction of future artistic trends. Now, we revisit these four principles to look forward from a history already consolidated in Brazil and abroad.MAM's trajectory also shows the fertility of its foundations, which gave rise to institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art at the University of São Paulo. Founded in 1963, MAC USP received the MAM-formed collection and maintained its seminal values. Both museums are united in this commemorative exhibition. The show is organized in two parts. In the Paulo Figueiredo Room there are works collected during the initial period of MAM, between 1949 and 1963. In the Great Room, there are works from the MAM and MAC USP collections acquired after that date. Connecting both rooms, is a historic timeline.
