Summary
New edition of a book originally published in 1878. Biography of Ducas Hippolyte, a 19th century Haitian poet and the times he lived in. Frederic Marcelin (1848-1917) was a Haitian writer and politician. He was Chief of the Haitian Department of Finance from 1892-1894 under President Hippolyte and again 1905-1908 in the administration of President Nord Alexis. In 1905, Marcelin establishes the journal Haïti littéraire et sociale. He published many essays such as Choses haïtiennes: politique et littérature (1896), Une evolution nécessaire (1898), Propos d'un haïtien (1915). He is best known for his novels Marilisse (1903), La Vengeance de Mama (1902), and Thémistocle Epaminondas Labasterre (1901).
