A compendium of theological and secular knowledge in the form of a dialogue between a pupil (Junger) and a master (Meister), adapted in part from Elucidarius of Honorius of Autun. See: Steer, Georg. • Woodcuts – France – 15th century.
Note
  • Composed in the late 12th century; the author is most likely a single person, not a team of authors, although because of a "prologue A" now believed fictitious, it was formerly attributed to chaplains of Heinrich der Löwe (approximately 1129-1195) in Braunschweig. "Der unbekannte 'Lucidarius'-Autor arbeitete ganz offensichtlich nicht an einem weltlichen Hof. Er entstammt aller Wahrscheinlichkeit nach der Bildungssphäre der Regularkanoniker aus dem Umkreis der Marbacher Reformgruppe"--Der deutsche Lucidarius. Bd. 1, Kritischer Text nach den Handschriften / herausgegeben von Dagmar Gottschall und Georg Steer, 1994, page 114*.
  • First published in Augsburg, 1479.
  • Imprint from colophon.
  • Signatures: a-f⁶·⁴. Last page blank.
  • German type; 34 lines.
  • Illustrations: 2 full-page cuts, 6 cuts in text. The cuts comprise: [1] Master and pupil, on title page; [2] the Empress on her deathbed (full-page), page [2]; [3] repeat of [1], page [3]; [4] fall of Lucifer, page [6]; [5] sun and moon and four heads of winds, page [8]; [6] sun and moon and four heads of kings, page [12]; [7] the Emperor, his son and seven savants, page [58]; [8] Jesus carrying the cross, page [59] (full-page). Cuts [2] and [7] were used by Hupfuff in 1498; [8] appears to be in a much earlier manner. See Schramm and Schreiber (cited below).
  • Initials in four sizes: medium A beginning title; large ornamental D beginning text on page [3]; outline N on page [20]; small d with black ground, six variations repeated to 40 in all.
