Summary
Journalist and cultural manager Andrea Franco (Galicia, Spain) presents a study of the relationships between cities, architecture and Ibero-American cinema, using recent iberoamerican films. "This book proposes a journey through the Ibero-American cinema of the new millennium to analyze the phenomena and realities that take place in the big cities and their limits from the vision of the filmmakers. The cinema seems to tell us that increasingly difficult to live in cities, confirming that many of them are on the verge of collapse. The general feeling of these characters is the melancholy for a place that disappears, the uprooting, loneliness ... genuinely urban conflicts that exist since the modern city exists but that today are increased by increasingly oppressive and dehumanized environments. But if the cities show signs of exhaustion, the cinema lives an artistic splendor without equal, renewing former cinematography, like the Colombian or the Brazilian, and highlighting new creators in zones without a cinema tradition, like Pernambuco or the Dominican Republic. This film-geography of the urban daily life, studies the historical relation between cinema and the city to scarcely explored new perspectives by the investigators of this subject; Cali, Santo Domingo, Recife, Santiago de Chile, Lisbon, Rio de Janeiro, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Brasilia or Madrid."--Verso Cover.
