- Description
- 1 audio disc : analog, 78 rpm, mono; 10 in.
- Summary
- A private recording made by Booker T. Washington in 1908. The African American statesman and educator recreates excerpts of his famous speech later known as "The Atlanta compromise," originally delivered at the Cotton States and International Exposition in Atlanta on Sept. 18, 1895, in which he laid out his program for the advancement of his race. Approximately one third of the speech is recorded on this disc, including the line "Cast down your bucket among these people who have, without strikes and labor wars, tilled your fields, cleared your forests, builded your railroads and cities, and brought forth treasures from the bowels of the earth."
