Note
  • Attributed to Defoe who first published it as "The present case of England and the Protestant interest." Cf. Moore, Checklist of the writings of Daniel Defoe, item 34a, and ESTC.
  • Caption title; imprint from ESTC.
  • Signatures: A².
  • Libraries have dated this work 1690, 1697 and 1702. The apparent allusions to Augustus, elector of Saxony, who became king of Poland in 1697, and to the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), the fact that on Sept. 17, 1701, Louis XIV recognized the Old Pretender as James III, and that on Feb. 20, 1702 Parliament passed the bill of attainder of the Pretender, suggest that this book was published late in 1701, certainly before th death of William III, March 8, 1702.
  • Unlike the copy described by Moore (34a), and the ones in the Huntington and Yale University libraries, the University of Illinois Library copy does not have the following addition to the last paragraph: And in the words of our liturgy, let us offer up our most fervent prayers to God Almighty, Give peace in our time, O Lord.
  • "A completely different printing [with fewer typographical errors] apparently unknown to Moore." Note of bookseller, Stonehill, laid in."
