Summary
One of the most-renowned conductors alive today, Mariss Jansons continues his journey through the greatest 20th century symphonic cycle - that of Soviet composer Dmitri Shostakovich. For this recording of the remarkable Fourth Symphony, he conducts one of Europe's top orchestras - the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra. Shostakovich's Fourth Symphony is one of the most important in his cycle both musically (it's the first really mature symphony) and historically. Having been attacked by the party for not writing appropriately Soviet music, Shostakovich reacted - fearing for his life - by suppressing this dark and powerful work, which received its premiere only after Stalin's death. Completed in 1936, it was finally heard in 1961, during the Khrushchev "thaw". It proved to be the vital tranistional work in his early career. It is a very Mahlerian work: with its unusual shape; deliberate exess with an enormous orchestra; and the use of popular styles such as dances and marches that appear either straightforwardly or ironically distorted.
