- "This program, in part, takes [an] historical look at the role of the legendary post Civil War detachment of Black men who were recruited by the U.S. Army to serve on the Western Frontier. The main focus of the half-hour program are the men of the 761st Tank Battalion of World War II. The highly honored 761st Tank Battalion was the first all-Black armored unit to fight for America. The program's objective was to inform, entertain and educate our audience about the historic role Black Americans played in defending this country--a role too often left out of the history books."--1989 Peabody Awards entry form. Includes historical photographs of the Cavalry units with Gen. Custer, and photographs and footage of the tank units with Gen. Patton. Includes interviews with Detroit-area veterans of the 761st Tank Battalion and the politicians who helped them receive official recognition from the U.S. government. Includes segment from the Bill Cosby Show that featured story of 761st capturing Nazi soldiers.
