Summary
Virgil Jones begins the oral history interview with his impression of Louis Armstrong, his technique and musical artistry. As an aspiring jazz trumpeter Jones was influenced by established jazz musicians such as Roy Eldridge, Charlie Shaver, Charlie Parker, and many others. He recalls working with West Montgomery and was impressed by his musicality. Jones discusses his association with Ray Charles and personal impressions of Charles. Jones was neighbors with Miles Davis on Riverside Drive in Manhattan. He gives an anecdote about the time Davis lent him one of his trumpets. Jones and Ridley discuss the importance of proper intonation in playing jazz.
