- Summary
- The oral history interview with Ronnie Matthews begins with his impressions of Louis Armstrong, followed by his early life and musical influences growing up in Brooklyn, New York. The jazz scene in Brooklyn was very influential. He began playing piano at the age of 17 and decided to pursue a career as a jazz musician. He discusses early musical associations with drummers, Roy Haynes, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Phllie Joe Jones, Elvin Jones, and how they influenced his musical development and sense of rhythm. In his twenties, Mathews toured internationally and recorded with Max Roach, Freddie Hubbard and Roy Haynes. He was also a member of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers in the late 1950s through the 1960s. He discusses his experience on Broadway with Black and Blue, Roland Hannah and Ruth Brown. The interview ranges on a variety of topics such as jazz education and various jazz musicians Matthews has worked with throughout his career.
