- Summary
- "'Teresita Fernández: Elemental' brings to life the myriad experiential and luminous works of Teresita Fernández's more than twenty-year career. Images of her visually alluring, monumental sculptures and installations reveal how one of the United States' most compelling contemporary artists investigates the intersection of culture and landscape. This catalogue captures the powerful nature of a creative practice that draws connections between landscape, history, place, and materiality. Included essays and interviews shed light on Fernández's sculptural and conceptual approaches, as well as her references to land, geology, and social order. Accompanying this monograph, the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) and Phoenix Art Museum have co-organized the retrospective Teresita Fernández: Elemental, the first midcareer survey of the 2005 MacArthur Foundation Fellow.
- Teresita Fernández's dazzling large-scale sculptures and installations employ diverse materials-charcoal, ceramics, chrome, steel, onyx, wood, resin, and enamel-with an utterly immersive effect. Accompanying a retrospective of Fernandez's career, and including images of her most recent installation, this book captures the powerful nature of an artistic practice exploring issues of perception, geography, ecology, history, and society. Featured works include Fire, her haunting ongoing series on the conceptual phenomena of landscape; Autumn (...Nothing Personal), created as a participatory space at Harvard University; and As Above, So Below, a series of immersive, interconnected installations referencing alchemy and the cosmos. Exhibition: Perez Art Museum, Miami, USA (18.10.2019-09.02.2020) / Phoenix Art Museum, USA (21.03.-24.05.2020) / New Orleans Museum of Art, USA (summer 2020 - winter 2021).
