Summary
In het magistrale schilderij 'Drie generaties' schilderde Charley Toorop zichzelf, haar inmiddels overleden vader, de gevierde kunstenaar Jan Toorop en haar zoon Edgar Fernhout. Ze schilderde zichzelf als spilfiguur tussen de generaties. Al eerder, in 1937, had zij middels een tentoonstelling de Toorop-dynastie voor het voetlicht gebracht. Daarbij gaf ze een representatief beeld van de diverse oeuvres, maar bovenal wilde ze de artistieke verwantschap tussen de drie generaties demonstreren. In deze publicatie staan de onderlinge relaties binnen de Toorop-dynastie centraal. Daarnaast wordt ingegaan op de oeuvres van de kunstenaar, die ondanks de grote verschillen in verschijningsvorm, wel degelijk verwantschap tonen.
