Such markings reveal details about book's history or context: manuscript notes indicate ownership, donation or dedication of work; fire or watermarks signal collection or library to which they belonged, as well as passage of certain book through various monasteries or private libraries; and heraldic ex libris seals tell about owner's social pretentions. More than half of book is devoted to reproductions of examples.
