Summary
The Harlem in Transition program was a series of free public programs exploring aspects of the changing Harlem community, presented at the Countee Cullen Library and other Harlem Libraries from October through December 1981. The program grew out of an initiative by the National Endowment for the Humanities to do a series throughout New York State with the title “A Sense of Community, Diversity, and Change.” When the New York Public Library was asked to participate, the Library felt the Harlem community with its significant history would be given the support to have the programs presented in Harlem.
