- Summary
- Collection consists of exterior and interior architectural views of early to mid-twentieth century facilities at the Harlem Hospital Center, in Harlem, New York City, taken in 2005 prior to being demolished for a modernization project. The buildings depicted are the Old Nurses Residence (built in 1915), and the New Nurses Residence and the Women's Pavilion (both built in 1932). Views consist of building facades, entrance ways, windows, rooftops, exterior building details, lobbies, hallways, room spaces, interior doorway details, stairwells, a boiler room, and electrical and plumbing systems.
- Also depicted are three Works Progress Administration-commissioned murals created by African American artists, consisting of Vertis Hayes's "Pursuit of Happiness" (1936) in the New Nurses Residence; and Charles Alston's "Magic in Medicine" and "Modern Medicine" (1940) in the Women's Pavilion. The murals were removed prior to the demolition, and later restored in a new hospital structure.

- Biography (note)
- The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation conducted a photographic survey of three structures at the Harlem Hospital Center, in Harlem, New York City, that were slated for demolition in 2005 as part of the hospital's planned modernization project. Done for the Historic American Buildings Survey, a division of the National Parks Service, the survey was an architectural record of the hospital's historic Old Nurses Residence, which was the last part of the original hospital complex from the early 20th century, and the New Nurses Residence and Women's Pavilion, both constructed during the 1930s as part of a major hospital expansion.
- As part of the 2005 modernization plan, supervised by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York, five historic Works Progress Administration-commissioned murals that were painted for the hospital were removed prior to the demolition, restored, and re-housed in Harlem Hospital's new Mural Pavilion in 2012. These works are "Pursuit of Happiness" (1936) by Vertis Hayes, "Recreation in Harlem" (1937) by Georgette Seabrooke Powell, and "Magic in Medicine" and "Modern Medicine" (1940) by Charles Alston, who were African American artists; and "Modern Surgery and Anesthesia" (1936) by Alfred Crimi.
