- Summary
- "The Book 'The Ritual Symbolism of Death, Burial and Ku Orôn (inquest) in Tiv Religious Culture' is the outcome of research findings carried out for about eight years. However, the author's fascination of the subject matter dates back earlier. The book examines Tiv funerary practices in Death, burial and Ku Orôn (inquest). To the Tiv, death is not a natural phenomenon; this implies that an agent is usually responsible for the occurrence of death often the mbatsav (witches). As a result when death occurs the Tiv observe the ritual practices of Ku orôn (inquest) in order to find out who is responsible for the death, the reason for causing the death and how to prevent further occurrence of death in the family and to an extent the community as a whole. The book similarly discussed the causes and instrument of death such as ingyato (consent fee), imborivungu (owl pile), ikpindi (flesh debt), tambe (bewitchment) and Bua (cow). These culminate in the examination of the religio-cultural significance of Ku orôn ritual symbolism among the Tiv."--Page 4 of cover.
