Summary
Six-year-old Sarah Marie lived up north, but every summer when school was out, she, her sister, and Mama would visit Grandma who lived in the south. That was 1956. Sarah Marie was beginning to learn to read the signs like the one on a bathroom door which says "white women" and another that says "colored women." And in front of the post office, on a water fountain, a sign says "white only." But, by the next summer, when they went back to visit Grandma, they all sat in the front seats in the bus; at the bus stop, they had lunch at the counter and had some soda. The bathroom signs said "women" or "men" -- no other way.
